The Limb Valley scheme is great but it is a shame the Whirlow Pond wasn’t desilted as part of the scheme. It has potential to store a lot of water. It is also used for canoeing by local Scout groups but the silt makes this increasingly unviable/dangerous.
I wonder with some careful design and desilting if this pond could become an outdoor swimming and water sports venue and part of the slow the flow scheme. As far as I can tell there no outflows running into it and it could provide important health and environmental benefits.
Also we need to find a way to tackle the invasive skunk cabbage in the valley before it spreads to Ecclesall woods.
A bit of a give away David. Has to be Endcliffe Park because that's where the Sheffield City Morris Women's team were practising. Can't say I recognize it though.
I was in Limb valley last week photographing those leaky dams for a blog I'm writing. Great scheme but we need that all around Sheffield. Moorland blanket bog is being restored by blocking gullies etc - good for flood prevention. But half the moors have shallow peat and particularly on the grouse moors nothing is being done there with burning and drainage continuing and increasing flood risk. The playing fields are interesting - they're just like the fifth of Sheffield land which is improved pasture often on steep slopes and flood waters pour off these. Urgent action is needed on all that land to save Sheffield from flooding.
(*Quickly Google mapping 1 mile radius from Chelsea Park*) 😊 Ecclesall Woods somewhere was my other guess but very much a guess…I only guessed Chelsea Park as I remember seeing some Morris Dancers outside the Union pub a few years ago!!
Great write up. That Jackie sounds like the kind of common sense civil servant that we need more of!
Thanks Ed. Yes, I think she has quite a wise head on her shoulders.

Thanks Andrew - good point about the pond. I’ll see if I can find out any more.

Two of you are close, but even though you may have the right park, where is that bench??

Thanks Bob - keep us posted about that blog.

Not Ecclesall Woods - ……
Good guess Cassa, not the correct answer but but you're not (quite) a mile away...
