Our Bank Holiday Supporter's Supplement - with out there news and more on the wild new garden for Park Hill
Today’s supplement has a short news roundup for everyone, and more on the incoming fabulous new On The Edge garden and sculpture at Park Hill for our lovely full supporters. The incoming garden celebrates the weeds, strange plant mixtures and creativity burgeoning at the edges between our towns and cities and the wild world beyond.
I’ve been learning about edge lands over recent weeks, and how nature loves them for their variety and opportunity. Take a glance at the long grass between your local wood and playing field, or the verge that’s so far avoided the mowers, and you’ll find more buzzing life than you’ll ever see in a similar patch of sheep-shorn countryside. (I hope to have a post on these kinds of things for our friends at The Sheffield Tribune soon).
Out There News Extra
Forged by Migration: Run Social - a new socially-paced 5k run for the Migration Matters festival will travel round places with migration stories in the city, followed by music and coffee and more socialising in the city centre. Route to be announced soon, but early sign ups welcome.
Graves Park Centenary - celebrate the foundation of the city’s largest park next weekend, with walks, sports and talks on Sat 30th / Sun 31st May and Weds 3rd June.
Gosh! - a new trail (and app) linking wild spaces and history around Hillsborough, Malin Bridge, Wisewood, and Wadsley is launched at a tour led by Hidden Sheffield Walks on Friday 29th May.
Small Park Big Run - registration is open for the 10th running of the 24 hour 1km circuit around Meersbrook Park supporting women’s education and children’s play in Palestine on Sat 20th and Sun 21st June. Walk or run all day and all night, or just for a few circuits, along with food, singing and dancing.
River Touring - the Sheaf & Porter Rivers Trust need more volunteer guides for this season’s Hidden Rivers tours along the underground rivers of inner city Sheffield. Full training provided.
Not That Hard Sell - we need a handful of free readers to upgrade to a pocket money full subscription every week to reach our target of 380 full supporters. We think Sheffield needs a magazine covering what’s happing out there in the Outdoor City, and if you’re reading here most weeks, it looks like you do too.
