Severe Gale at Abney - by Anna Perotti

Wide skies, fog, muted colours and textures. Hills creating ever-changing light and skies. A wealth of complexity.

This post for full subscribers hears how and why Sheffield attracts and inspires landscape artists, with a short feature on a handful of local exhibitors, after we put the call out to organisers of Open Up Sheffield this month.

The second weekend of the art event stretches from Hope to Manor Lane, from Apperknowle to Silkstone. Launched with a tiny arts council grant in 1998, local artists and craftspeople open up their early summer studios every year (often in the back room of their house) so the public can see and maybe buy their wares, and chat about how they create their work.

Organisers say it’s worth treating the event as a chance to unearth the creativity hiding in your own neighbourhood, but you're equally welcome to make an expedition around the colourful studios of the 130 artists taking part.

Open Up Sheffield continues this weekend (10th and 11th May) with studios usually open from 11am to 5pm, but please check individual artists on the Open Up Sheffield site to check open days and times.
